Book Description
Excerpt from Advanced Biology Most adolescent boys and girls are more interested in themselves than in abstract problems. Although colleges emphasize mathematics and languages in their entrance requirements and say little about science, there has been a rapid growth in the number of sciences elected in the high schools. This is primarily due to the realization that science is more a part of the lives of pupils than other school subjects and an answer to more of their questions. Youth is more interested in making direct observations and reasoning from them than in abstract thinking. There is a concerted effort to ascertain the truth about phenomena and to find out how and why things happen. Science teaches a valid method of interpreting evidence and helps one to arrive at logical conclusions. In most secondary schools throughout the country elementary biology or general science is taught in the first or second year. There has been a growing demand for an advanced course in general biology to follow the elementary science course. This text has been written primarily to fill this need. The emphasis of the book is on problems relating to human welfare. The origin and principles of the development, structure, and functions of plants and lower animals are introduced mainly as a background for the proper understanding of human problems. An interesting and novel feature of the text is the historical treatment of many of the subjects, which gives the pupil a bird's-eye view of the entire subject without overwhelming him with unrelated facts. Teaching material is given at the end of each chapter, designed to help the pupil in organizing, in his own mind, the important principles discussed. The list of supplementary readings offers the pupil sources of information other than the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The tremendous progress in biology over the last half century - from Watson and Crick's elucidation of the structure of DNA to today's astonishing, rapid progress in the field of synthetic biology - has positioned us for significant innovation in chemical production. New bio-based chemicals, improved public health through improved drugs and diagnostics, and biofuels that reduce our dependency on oil are all results of research and innovation in the biological sciences. In the past decade, we have witnessed major advances made possible by biotechnology in areas such as rapid, low-cost DNA sequencing, metabolic engineering, and high-throughput screening. The manufacturing of chemicals using biological synthesis and engineering could expand even faster. A proactive strategy - implemented through the development of a technical roadmap similar to those that enabled sustained growth in the semiconductor industry and our explorations of space - is needed if we are to realize the widespread benefits of accelerating the industrialization of biology. Industrialization of Biology presents such a roadmap to achieve key technical milestones for chemical manufacturing through biological routes. This report examines the technical, economic, and societal factors that limit the adoption of bioprocessing in the chemical industry today and which, if surmounted, would markedly accelerate the advanced manufacturing of chemicals via industrial biotechnology. Working at the interface of synthetic chemistry, metabolic engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology, Industrialization of Biology identifies key technical goals for next-generation chemical manufacturing, then identifies the gaps in knowledge, tools, techniques, and systems required to meet those goals, and targets and timelines for achieving them. This report also considers the skills necessary to accomplish the roadmap goals, and what training opportunities are required to produce the cadre of skilled scientists and engineers needed.
